Hundreds of beach-loving Israelis pitch in to defend coastline protections

11/08/2016

This summer, we had an emergency situation on our hands. A series of devastating reforms could ruin the coastline we know and love and with it, the quality of life of many Israelis.

In response we launched our first-ever emergency crowd-funding campaign for Israeli supporters. Within a week, hundreds of committed Israelis helped us reached our goal!

Israelis understand that their most loved recreational resource is in danger and have confidence in our ability to protect it for us all!

WOW! When we kicked-off our first-ever emergency crowd-funding campaign we never imagined how far it would go. We were blown away by the incredible encouragement and support of Israelis who are standing up and saying, ‘Israel is crowded enough as it is! The beach is sacred. It’s where we go to unwind and chill out - we’ll do anything to protect it!’

Within a week you helped us to reach our goal. By the end the campaign you helped us beat our target by 71%! Knowing that so many Israelis share our values keeps us going – in the Knesset, in court, in the media. To all of you who made a gift, shared a post or forwarded the campaign to a friend – you played a key role in protecting our beaches; we couldn’t have done it without you!”

HOW ISRAELIS HELPED US TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Our legal and planning experts are pulling out all of the stops:

1. In the Knesset: Securing fundamental coastline protections in a controversial law which aims to ‘boost’ tourism by fast-tracking the construction of new hotels. Although the law gives entrepreneurs the green light to allot 20% of the hotel land for private residences as an incentive to build more hotel rooms, we made sure to that this will NOT apply to hotels near the coastline. This important provision means that the golden rule has been upheld: Israel’s beaches are a place of tourism and recreation for EVERYONE who wants to enjoy them. Read more about the law here.

2. In the Courts: Petition to the High Court of Justice to stop the approval of a new master plan for the country's coastline (Tama 1) which will cancel the protected status of 3,200 acres (13,000 dunams) of beaches and leave them open for rezoning for construction. The move is part of a process to replace existing master plans with new versions which drastically reduce the protections now in place for coastal areas. Read more about our petition here.

3. In the media (don’t worry it’s in English):

Thanks to the help of committed supporters like YOU, the pressure in the Knesset and in the media is working.

But there’s a lot more work to be done!

We all have precious memories of Israel’s beaches. Help us to ensure that our kids will be able to create these memories too!
