Asbestos: What we're doing now

Our Green Alert advisory service handles at least 40 requests every year from people seeking advice on asbestos in their homes and surroundings.

We advise worried callers on how to assess the type of asbestos they encounter and if it's a straightforward need for removal of an asbestos hazard, we refer them to the Environmental Protection Ministry's effective asbestos testing & removal division.

In some cases, we need to use our advocacy and media skills to leverage action on complicated asbestos exposure events.

Recently, we helped low-income residents of a former public housing project in Haifa organize to demand the removal of asbestos cladding on the exterior walls of their apartments. As a result of our advocacy and public pressure, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has agreed to assess the degree of exposure and to assign responsibility for removal of the asbestos if necessary.
