The Prime Minister's has unveiled stage two of his plans to reform Planning & Building laws. Among other changes, he wants to abolish the Coastline Protection Committee and the Committee for Protection of Agricultural Spaces. These two commissions serve as a buffer in which planners and public representatives work to ensure that new building conforms to planning laws and that scarce open spaces are preserved for future generations.

Supreme Court: Protect children from pollution

Air pollution threats to 900 children at an elementary school in East Jerusalem have been curtailed thanks to legal action by IUED, ACRI and parents of the children at the school. A recent check confirmed that efforts to remove the source of pollution - a heavy metals manufacturing plant - are being implemented.

High cancer rates at Negev army base

At a hearing on October 26, the High Court of Justice ordered the state to explain why it is not limiting activities at the Tel Arad Nahal training base, in light of the findings that cancer rates among soldiers are higher than at other bases. The state has asked for another month in which to conclude its examination of environmental conditions at the base. The court's decision in this matter is due November 2.

State must return monies

The High Court of Justice ruled today that some $65 million must be transferred from the State’s general budget to the National Quarries Rehabilitation Fund. IUED petitioned the court in 2003 to recover levies accrued for remediation of disused quarries.

Power struggle

Opposition burns fiercely to expansion of coal-fired power generation at IEC's Ashekon power plant. In response to a public campaign by IUED and the coaliton of NGOs, over 20,000 objections were filed with the National Infrastructure Committee; 300 objections are currently under review at public hearings.

Needed: Israeli government strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Israel. With the December 2009 Copenhagen convention coming up fast, IUED is advocating specific measures to be adopted.
