Natural Resources

Is the public benefitting or is the State enabling corporate profit-making only? What needs to be done to make sure that all extraction of natural resources - including minerals from the Dead Sea - is done in a way that safeguards the environment for future generations?

Natural gas – the key to energy independence?

Israel’s got natural gas, lots of it. Large deposits of natural gas off Israel’s Mediterranean coast could produce energy self sufficiency for Israel for decades. The much celebrated discoveries come at a time when imports of natural gas from Egypt have ceased due to constant acts of sabotage of the pipeline. Economists estimate the offshore gas finds are worth more than $100 billion and could provide a significant boost to Israel’s GDP.However, this road to energy independence is a bumpy one: there are plenty of hazards to navigate carefully if the gas finds are to be a bonanza and not a bane.

The discovery has sparked a bitter public row and the government, its advisors, gas entrepreneurs and public interest representatives are at loggerheads over the 'true value' of Israel's natural resources.

Who wants an oil shales project?

We are waiting for our day in court when the Supreme Court sitting as the High Court of Justice will examine the validity of a license granted by the Ministry of Infrastructure to IEI to process oil shales in the Adullam Region. Touted by entrepreneurs as 'the way to Israel's energy independence', the project is meeting with strong opposition from the public and from environmentalists demonstrating this week in Jerusalem.
